Abandoned administration centre property sold to local buyer, to stay office space

Posted February 7, 2025

The seat of local government in that building since 1970 - expanded to a second floor in 1987 - but on the site since 1881, has been sold for $2.6 million.

At this post, the buyer, a numbered company - has not been identified other than  a "New Tecumseth resident and business owner purchased the property with plans to invest in and repurpose the buildings for professional spaces."

It's believed tenants could include the professional and white collar trades working on Honda's $15 billion electrifcation of its plants in Alliston, providing an under one roof headquarters like environment.

Abandoned since last June, on and off the real estate market for the past few years, the shuttered property has/is being used as temporary public parking for downtown Alliston which will end in April when the deal is expected to close.

Last month, a report to council recommended demolition as a means of increaseing its value and appeal; that there was interest from non-profits and other groups for office space, but estimated to cost more than $5 million to make it habitable for such uses.

“We are thrilled with this investment in our downtown which aligns with the intended use and zoning for the property," said New Tecumseth CAO, Neil Garbe in the press reelase announcing the sale. "The potential for increased foot traffic will provide a boost for our local businesses."

Mayor Richard Norcross, was not quoted in the press release - which would normally be the case for an issue like this. At this post Mayor Norcross had not replied to text for comment on the sale.

Reportedly the decision to sell was not unanimous as there was support to retain the property for parking.

At this post an email for comment on the sale from the BIA, was not replied.

More details on future plans for the property when they are confirmed.
