Town puts 12 crossing guard locations on chopping block
Posted December 4, 2024
New Tecumseth councillors (at least the majority) supported the option of dealing with staffing crossing guard positions by eliminating 12 locations that don't meet minimum warrants, reducing the 2025 budget expenditures by $171,600.
"The crossing guard program has faced challenges with consistent staff turnover, often requiring office staff to cover shifts, according to a report to council. "Twelve of the 22 locations in 2023 did not meet the minimum warrant requirements as determined by (consultant) WSP."
A final decision would be made as part of the council approval of the 2025 budget, expected in council Dec. 16. Below is the list of locations and the 12 proposed to be eliminated.
Ward 1 councillor Chris Rapin, an elementary school teacher in Alliston, said eliminating crossing guard locations would likely lead to more students being driven right up to the school, adding to the current conflict between school buses and vehicles.
