Bradford mayor moves to revisit option to reduce County council size

Posted January 9, 2025

Bradford West Gwillimbury Mayor James Leduc has moved a notice of motion asking Simcoe County council to reconsider last October's decision to support a 33-member body, including a full-time Warden, when they meet for the first time in 2025 next Tuesday morning.

The decision to keep the status quo 32, bolstered by an appointed full-time Warden, was followed at a subsequent meeting by councillors voting to increase their salaries from, $18,079 to $47,717 implemented in thirds over a three year period effective Jan, 1 2025.

Leduc's motion is related to the 167 per cent hike which caught the attention of Premier Doug Ford at the time who likened it to "the fox taking care of the henhouse. They’re all voting for their increase,” Ford said. “This has to stop. That’s what frustrates me, when you’re wasting taxpayers money and then you’re out on the other side screaming I need more money. Stop blowing the taxpayers money and be responsible.”

The option presented by the Governance Committee to County councillors which was rejected, would reduce the council composition to 16 being the mayors of the 16 member municipalities, plus a full-time Warden.
