Jebb proposes mural at NTRC to honour renowned local professional athletes

Posted September 6, 2019

One of the potential subjects of a proposed mural at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre (NTRC) that pays homage to local athletes who reached the pinnacle of their sports, calls it a "great idea."

Darrin Shannon, who played in the NHL between 1988 and 1998, told Free Press Online he wasn't aware of Ward 5 councillor Donna Jebb's pending request for council to direct Town staff to investigate erecting a mural in the main lobby featuring sporting figures with roots in the community.

"I'm a sport guy myself, and I love when I'm at a rink/ or sports facility, to go and check the history of the particular town, who the recognized players/ or people are, and what their accomplishments were, in all the different kinds of sports," Mr. Shannon said via email. "Whoever they decide to acknowledge will be great, as every town has its own history, and will have many people who are deserving of the recognition."

Ms. Jebb's initial subject list "but not limited to" includes former NHLers Reg Noble; Wayne CarltonJim Rutherford who is to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in November,  Darryl Shannon, John Gould; Manny Legace; and Canadian Olympic Women's Soccer Bronze Medalist, Deanne Rose.

"(T)hese professional athletes have provided a positive impact within the community by becoming role models to children and adults alike both on and off the field providing encouragement and confidence," according to Ms. Jebb's motion on Monday night's council agenda. "(T)he positive contributions to the community by these athletes should be recognized and acknowledged."
