Mixed bag as crime rates, MVCs tick up in February

Nottawasaga OPP dealt with 91 motor vehicle collisions in February, an increase of 15.2 per cent over the same period last year, according to the monthly summary of activity report to the Police Services Board. In the first two months of 2018, there were 191 accidents reported, up 15.1 per cent.

However, the number of accidents involving injuries were down 7.7 per cent in February and down 25 per cent in the first two months, over the same period last year.

There were 25 reported violent crimes in February, up from 22 the same time last year, led by a 22 per cent increase in assaults - 11, up from nine. Coupled together with January, the first two months were down 5.9 per cent, 48, down from 51.

Property crime reports dropped 39.7 per cent in February, and down 35.1 per cent in the first two months over the same period last year.

Drug possession charges climbed 42.9 per cent with 10 in February, while the combined rate for the first two months dropped 30.4 per cent.
