Nottawasaga Inn seeks noise exemption for golf course maintenance

Posted July 8, 2019

Residents living along the golf courses in Green Briar and Briar Hill will start hearing the sounds of lawn mowers beginning at 6 am if New Tecumseth councillors tonight approve a noise exemption for the Nottawasaga Inn.

In a letter dated July 2 to the Town from Jamie Sheppard, the resort's Director of Golf, the request for seasonal exemptions requested between May and September.

The resort operates two golf courses - Nottawasaga and the Ridge - lined by houses throughout the Briars communities.

The Town's noise control bylaw prohibits construction or maintenance activities other than snow removal Monday to Friday 7:00 p.m. to the following 7:00 a.m.; Saturday 7:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.; and Sunday and Statutory Holidays At all times to the following 7:00 a.m.

"Tee times for seasonal pass holders, residents, hotel guests and public players etc begin at 6:30 - 7:00 am depending on the month and time of year. On all golf courses, general maintenance including closely cut greens, tees and fairways is required prior to the first tee time. These starting times are not unique to Nottawasaga and are generally available at all golf courses," according to Mr. Sheppard's letter.

"It is imperative for our turf/golf maintenance crew to commence cutting at 6 am to stay ahead of the morning players. Green cutting, tee cutting and fairway maintenance is virtually impossible to perform safely once players are on the course and leaves no other alternative but to begin this general maintenance before morning tee times commence. Beginning at 6am and avoiding golfers provides a safe work environment. Performing their duties while golfers are actively playing would dramatically increase an employee's chances of serious injury and liability."

He suggests the expemption be worked into the policy as an update to the bylaw.

"Other cities and municipalities have included golf course use for a 6 am start within the bylaw."

Council has scheduled a "special meeting" following its regular committee meeting tonight with the single item on the agenda to approve the exemption so it would take affect tomorrow morning.
