Posted September 3, 2019

The Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) Ontario component today opened its intake stream for cost sharing the next wave of community, culture and recreation facilities across the province.

For New Tecumseth it's expected the contending projects for application is the proposed recreation centre in Beeton, and/or indoor pool.

ICIP defines Community infrastructure "as publicly accessible, multi-purpose spaces that bring together a variety of different services, programs and/or social and cultural activities to reflect local community needs."

The federal government has committed $407 million and Ontario $320 million over 10 years. Successful applications are expected to receive up to 40 per cent federal; 33.33 per cent provincial; and 26.67 per cent funding contributions.

Eligible projects are in two categories:

  • a. Multi-Purpose Category with an individual project cap of about $50 million in total project cost, including new build / construction projects; larger scale renovation or expansion of existing facilities. And
  • b. Rehabilitation and Renovation Category, small-scale projects that would improve the condition of existing facilities with a cap of $5 million. These include small-scale improvements to address accessibility (e.g., hand rails, ramps, accessible doors/parking/elevators, wayfinding and signage etc.). And, Small new build / construction projects of recreation, cultural or community centre infrastructure (e.g., playing fields, tennis courts, small community squares)

Criteria for assessment of projects to qualify for funding will includei f there is an existing facility in place; provide a description of proposed/anticipated operating plan of the facility including details of revenue, costs, and funding received from all levels of government to operate the facility; and list the distance between the facility and the nearest facility providing similar services.

Municipalities have until Nov. 12, 2019 by 11:59 pm to submit their application and supporting documents. The projects themselves approved for funding must be completed by March 31, 2027.
