Crime rates down in first half of 2018

Violent, property and drug crime rates were down during the first half of 2018 by double digit percentages in New Tecumseth, Essa, and Adjala Tosorontio, according to the Nottawasaga OPP's monthly summary report for the Police Services Board.

There were 138 reports of violent crime between January 1 and June 31, a decrease from 161 or 14.3 per cent over the same period last year. The number of assaults reported were 66, a drop from 90 or 26.7 per cent. The number of sexual assaults however increased to 17 from 15, a 13.3 per cent hike. Robberies were also up from four to seven in the first half.

Property crimes were down 17.1 per cent from 397 to 329 reported, with the decreases in all the subcategories including a 31 per cent drop in mischiefs.

Drug crimes were down 21.7 per cent, from 60 to 47.

The opposite trend on local roads policed by OPP as speeding charges were up 25.6 per cent in the first half of 2018, with 2,476 tickets issued up from 1,972. Districted driving charges increased 142 per cent with 75 charges, up from 31 over the same period in 2017. Impaired charges were down 24.6 per cent from 69 in 2017 to 52 through to June 31.

The second half of 2018 also started on a downward trend with violent crimes down 9.1 per cent in July. Property crimes were down 8.8 per cent and drug crimes down 23.8 per cent in July, over the same period last year.

Motor vehicle collisions were down 1.4 per cent in the first half with 500 reported, down from 507. Three of those were fatal, up from one last year.
