Uncertainty, looming funding cuts put strategic planning on hold

Posted May 9, 2019

Simcoe County council's annual strategic planning session scheduled for next month will be suspended because the impacts from a combination of the regional government review and "significant" provincial funding cuts and program changes, cannot be forecasted.

"At this time, full impacts are not known as the regulations and details have not been fully announced and communicated to staff," according to a report by Simcoe County treasurer Lealand Sibbick. "Due to the above noted items, and the current uncertainty relating to long term operations and strategic planning, staff are recommending that County Council continue to focus on the Regional Review input and implications, and suggest that the 2019 Strategic planning session scheduled for June 13, 2019, be cancelled at this time. Any direction or reports which are still required for operations which are traditionally dealt with at the Strategic Planning session, would be submitted and considered at future Committee of the Whole meetings."

This follow's on last month's cancellation of the municipal comprehensive review planning process.

Strategic planning sessions include recapping Council initiatives and achievements; Strategic Initiatives Report Card; Long Term Financial Plan; High Level Budget Assumptions Review and approval of high level budget assumptions to be used for developing the 2019 Budget; Surplus Allocations; and Other matters as directed.

"Any direction or reports which are still required for operations which are traditionally dealt with at the Strategic Planning session, would be submitted and considered at future Committee of the Whole meetings."
