54 County councillors on 2018 payroll cost over $715k

Simcoe County council cost ratepayers approximately $716,000 in remunerations and expenses in 2018, an overlap year between election terms that included 54 people collecting a salary.

Gerry Marshall, who was Warden until he resigned last August as Mayor of Penetanguishene to take an interim CAO position with the Town of Wasaga Beach, was paid $55,985 in remunerations and $5,167 in expenses. Former Essa mayor Terry Dowdall, who was Deputy Warden in 2018, was next highest with a salary of $48,919, and expenses of $10,696 (highest on the list).

New Tecumseth Mayor Rick Milne was paid $15,798 and $1,469 in expenses, while then Deputy Mayor Donna Jebb took home $14,104, and $150 in expenses. Also on the list for New Tecumseth are Paul Whiteside, alternate member in 2018 who was paid $1,232, and Deputy Mayor Richard Norcross whose remuneration of $214 for one meeting in 2018.

Last month councillors voted themselves salary increases retroactive to January 1, pushing the Warden's annual remuneration to $80,274, an increase of $15,353. The Deputy Warden's new rate is $51,227, up $7,951, while councillors remuneration climbs to $15,921, an increase of $1,711.
