Reported violent, property, and drug crimes across the
Nottawasaga OPP's jurisdiction experienced double digit percentage
decreases in 2017 over the year before, according to the December
summary report to the Police Services Board.
There were 288 violent crime incidents in 2017, down from 321
in 2016, a 10.3 per cent cent drop. Robbery was the only category to
increase going from five in 2016 to 11 in 2017, a 120 per cent hike.
Property crimes dropped 18.1 per cent, going from 996 in 2016
to 816 in 2017. The only category increase involved possession of
stolen goods, up 23 from 12, a 91.7 per cent increase. And, the number
of fraud incidents incresaed 18 per cent, from 139 in 2016 to 164 in
Drug related crimes decreased 23.7 per cent, from 118 in 2016 to 90 in
2017. The number of possession charges droped from 86 to 57, a drop of
33.7 per cent. The number of trafficking charges were the same, 31 in
2016 and in 2017.
On the roads, the number of motor vehicle collisions climbed
1.4 per cent with 1,087 reported in 2017 up from 1,072 in 2016. Five
people were killed in 2017, equalling the five fatals in 2016.
