Bogus business conference listed Nottawasaga Resort as venue

Posted March 11, 2020

Nottawasaga OPP issued a warning this morning an event billing itself as the International Fair Trade Business and Investors Summit, advertised to be held April 9-11, 2020 at the Nottawasaga Inn Resort and Conference Centre, is a scam.

OPP Constable Katy Viccary, Community Safety Officer/Media Relations Officer said police were contacted by the Nottawasaga Inn Resort and Conference Centre "after receiving numerous alerts from members of the public that people had paid their registration fees by way of Bitcoin through the website http://itfbis111.canadaconferenceboard.com/ITFBIS.htm."

She said the website "is fictitiously advertising the event at the Nottawasaga Inn (...) who advised me that no such conference or summit is taking place during the dates being advertised (April 9-11) or any event like such."

"Nottawasaga OPP can confirm that this is a fraudulent scheme and would like to make our community aware of atrocious effort on behalf of fraudsters to defraud the public," according to Constable Viccary. "Members of the public are encouraged to make themselves familiar with on-going scams in Canada and report fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by visiting http://www.antifraudcentre.ca or by calling ‐888‐495‐8501."
