Barrie man charged after fleeing accident scene, passengers injured

Posted October 11, 2018

A 24-year-old male from Barrie turned himself into Nottawasaga OPP Sunday night and faces multiple charges following a single vehicle crash Saturday night in Essa.

OPP reported this morning they were called to the intersection of Cty Rd 56 and 20th SR at approximately 9:05 pm on Oct. 6.

"A witness to the crash advised that while he was travelling westbound on 20th Sideroad, he was overtaken by another westbound vehicle at a high rate of speed," according to the press release. "The passing vehicle then lost control as it travelled through the intersection at County Road 56. The vehicle came to rest in the ditch at the southwest corner of the intersection. The driver then fled into the bush prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, leaving behind two injured passengers."

One of the female passengers was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

"The Central Region Canine Unit and Emergency Response Team (ERT) assisted Nottawasaga Detachment personnel with a ground search which had negative results."

The driver turned up at the OPP detachment at 6:30 on Oct. 7.

He has been charged with multiple criminal driving offences and will make a court appearance on November 15.
