First budget draft hikes Township's spending by $850k

Adjala Tosorontio council will meet in special session Thursday morning starting at 9 am for presentation of the 2018 draft municipal budget that pegs spending at $12.4 million, an increase of $849,794 over 2017. Revenue is estimated at $12 million, which leaves a proposed tax levy hike of $402,978.

Separated, the operating budget increase is 2.93 per cent, and the capital budget up 4.97 per cent.

The estimated impact on the municipal portion of the Township's property taxes is a $6 increase per $100,000 of Market Value Assessment, which is a 2.2 per cent increase over 2017.

Increases to salaries, wages and benefits are listed at $587,560, which accounts for the largest slice of the $849,794 spending increase. Salaries are to climb 5.5 per cent, including 1.8 per cent COLA increase. And, "Unavoidable needs" of 7 per cent Sun life, 4.5 per cent CPP, and 1.21 per cent El, and 3.23 per cent WSIB."

The draft budget also shows $58,000 increase for consultant fees related to "potential outsourcing of services such as salary compensation review, update of the water and sewer study etc"; and $30,000 more for legal fees.

OPP will cost the Township $5.7 million in 2018.
